Magic

April 22nd, 2010

I grew up on Magic Sands
Sailor Moon and Pokemon cards
Skinned knees from bike rides
Barbies with the girls
Games with the boys
Anything was possible
Until the streetlights came on
Sunsets were mysteries
I couldn’t read the clock
But I would wake up early
To beat my brothers to the Playstation
Overalls and dresses
Hiking and makeup
Childhood was everything
That is should be
Long days on Kristen’s porch
And sneaking into the hot tub
This neighborhood was an adventure
Long walks to the pool
Scootering through the laundry room
Bike rides around the block
My imagination couldn’t stop
But funny to imagine
I ever wanted to grow up
And funnier to realize
This made me who I’ve become

Autonomy

March 13th, 2020

You twist my arm
Like I’m a plastic toy
I said I’m not a Doll
But it’s pain that you enjoy
You turn me around
Like my path is easily altered
But I can make my own choices
Even if you think I’ll falter
You throw your words
Like a knife into my back
You want me to need you
But love doesn’t work like that

The Secret Life of Dolls

January 15th, 2019

Let’s go back
To a story that never started
Where a porcelain toy
Wasn’t left broken hearted
Let’s go back
To memories that don’t exist
Because the bruises never formed
At the hands of angry fists
Let’s go back
To when you didn’t drink the bottle
It fell empty on its own
And you’re still a perfect role model
Let’s go back
To when you didn’t let me down
You must have told me you were moving
Before you left town
Let’s go back
To when our family was defined
And I will delete what never happened
From the archives of my mind
